Where is the Art

If you have noticed that the art gallery is a little sparse now. There is a good reason for that.

Like restoring old artwork masterpieces before putting them on display, most of my digital art collection needs to go through a "digital restoration". In this case rendering at a high resolution for today's printing and video capabilities. This is similar to the same transfer process that afflicts many TV shows and movies moving from one video format to another DVD to Blu-Ray to 4K Ultra-HD. In some cases, studios can go back and rescan the film negative to a higher resolution. However, some visual effects are done entirely on computer so there is no film to rescan. All the visual effects must be redone which is costly even if the files and software from the originals still exist. Likewise, I must go back to my original source files and have the computer recreate (ray trace, render) the images at a higher resolution than the first one I created.

Below is an example of Garden. Originally rendered at 800x600. If viewed on a phone or tablet you may not be able to discern a difference. However, on a computer display look at the benches and texture in the fountain. When 800x600 gets stretched to twice its original resolution the quality starts breaking down. We each may have differing opinions of acceptable quality for web display, but that is not the only issue. The larger problem is printing. Print labs print around 300 dpi today versus digital renders which are produced at 72 dpi. That results in a print size of 2.6 x 2 inches. Ouch! To compensate I select a final print size at 300 dpi and then ratio up to determine the size I need to render the image at 72 dpi.

I will be selecting works from across two decades instead of working chronologically to provide diversity and to highlight how technology has impacted this art medium. This will provide you an opportunity to discover new works on return visits. To keep apprised of new additions please sign up for my newsletter.
